I love this photo that I spotted on African Heritage City. Such a beautiful group of young ladies. It is a reminder that if we are taught to love our hair & features at a young age - that we will love who we are from the beginning.
Bantu Knots
I just found this gorgeous picture online of a women wearing Bantu Knots. My mom, who is newly natural, is trying the Bantu Knots to achieve coil curls. It just goes to show, that it is never to late to get back to your roots.
Ivy Charlaine's Hair Story
Name: 'Ivycharlaine'
Q: What is your hair story? What kind of hair styles have you rocked, before embracing your natural hair?
A: Wow my hair story is crazy and was very unpredictable. I've gone from getting relaxers to flat ironing my hair and keeping it super long to dyeing it blonde, brown & red at times. I've also chopped it all off and shaved the back. This was all before I decided to go natural.
Q: When and why did you decide to start wearing your hair naturally?
A: I decided to go natural a little over 3 years ago. I was at a point in my life where my hair was shoulder length and dyed a dark blonde/light brown color and was super damaged from heat and dye. I hadn't had a relaxer in almost ten years at that time however my hair was so damaged that it would barely curl when it was wet. I also started noticing women with beautiful, big, curly natural hair and I loved it so I made the decision to go natural. Which to me meant putting down my flat iron and growing out the damaged parts of my hair (basically my whole head lol).Q: Did you have any big fears about going back to your natural texture?
A: I was a little nervous about the unknown. I had basically worn my hair straight for my entire life (except when I was a kid) so I wasn't sure how my hair would look natural and I couldn't even remember what my curls looked like.
Q: What are three products you can't live without for nurturing/styling your hair?
A: First off I think water is the #1 best thing for your hair. I also love, love, love coconut oil and Shidanaturals moisturizing cream.
Q: What would you say to someone who's thinking about embracing their natural hair, but scared about being rejected in various parts of their lives?
A: Just do it! I'm so glad I made that decision. I absolutely love my hair and I love that it's different, unique and all my own. Don't worry about society's view on natural hair, because lately that's been changing a lot and you see a lot of natural beauties in the media and in the workplace. Embrace the natural beauty that God has blessed you with. I straighten my hair every now and then but I get so excited when I go back to my curls.

She’s interracial and has beautiful curly hair. I try to use only non-alcohol products. I love the Pantene curly line on her hair. "My hair journey began summer of 2011, I've been natural all my life but I never cared for my hair it was extremely heat damaged from all the trips to the hair salon. So I decided that I would take baby steps, so I would never feel like I was forcing myself to stay away from heat. I wore wash n go's for months and then in January I started protective styling. Throughout my journey I've used various different products, but the ones that I truly love are Organics Olive Oil Shampoo and Replenishing Conditioner, Cantu Shea Butter and Olive Oil Eco-Styler. I have a lot of hair so I get a wide range of reactions when people see my hair. Living in New York there are a lot of strange and different people, but yet my hair never fails to amaze people. I've had people touch my hair with out permission, people follow me around bombarding me with questions on what I use, I don't mind at all though. But then unfortunately I've had people doubt me and wither I'm lying about my hair. People always assume that I'm mixed or wear Afro wigs , which is obviously not true. My advice to other women that want to go natural is to first find confidence within yourself , people are going to try to put you down and tell you things like "girl you need slap a perm in that hair", but you cant fall into temptation if this is something you really want to do. What makes you a Natural Beauty: I rock my hair confidently with hopes to inspire other women and girls to do the same.
Favorite Looks: I love to mix edgy and classic pieces.
How do you like to rock your natural hair: Right now my go-to style is a high puff. I've been natural for almost 11 months. As I get more length I experiment with different styles. I've done a twa, frohawk, braided updo, ponytail updo, twistouts, box braids and french braids.
What advice would you give to others thinking of going natural: Go for it! Make sure you research, it makes the process much easier. Going natural has been one of the best decisions i've made. Hearing my 4-year-old niece exclaim that my hair is like hers is priceless.

"I've been natural for about 4 years and I've had locs for 3 and a half years. I went natural with the intention
of having locs because I've always admired them. I don't really use many products. I wash with suave clarifying shampoo and retwist with olive oil and sometimes gel.
