The New York Times has announced THE haircut of the year has arrived. Already. Vogue is calling it the Chop, others have named it the Karlie, after the model Karlie Kloss.
After appearing backstage at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show with a short hairdo back in November,Vogue declared Karlie's new haircut the “cut of the moment” in a four-page feature story in the January issue. Vogue is saying “the season’s new hair is swingy, sexy — and refreshingly easy to wear.” It's a short ‘do with a rock and roll inspired edge.
The look, created by hairstylist Garren Defazio, who was responsible for the iconic hairstyles of Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington and Amber Valletta, claims that it’s neither a bob nor a shag, but a one-length cut with a slight layer in the front.
The ubiquitous cut had been named The Chop — shorthand for its shaggy, just-took-the-shears-to-my-own-ponytail quality, and has inspired an array of reactions online. A Huffington Post headline asked “Karlie Kloss’ Haircut: The Next ’Rachel’?” referring to Jennifer Aniston’s Friends-era layered cut.
The Chop appears to be just a regular shoulder-length bob with bangs. Not much layering, the same length all around. I’ve seen this haircut pass by me on the street hundreds of times without taking a second glance. But now that its worn by Karlie and featured in Vogue, The New York Times is calling it the cut of the year. Hair salons that specialize in bobs will probably jump on this momentous re-branding opportunity.
Now, maybe I’m biased, but I just don't see how unwashed hair with bangs that are always too long because you’re too busy/lazy/broke to properly maintain them “The Haircut of the Year,” especially since The Chop is just a bob with bangs, Which people have been rocking since about six billion years before Karlie Kloss was born.
